The Drums – S/T (Island/Moshi Moshi)

The Drums are like The Smiths reincarnated poorly, and yet they made my top ten list of albums this year. Fey? Yes. Pretentious? Absolutely. Overwrought? You bet. But isn’t that what makes them so good?

have you ever even heard the Smiths? There’s nothing on that Drums LP that even remotely resembles them. Nothing. New Order, maybe. Vampire Weekend doing New Order. That’s what it sounds like.

First of all I said “reincarnated poorly.” Got it? Secondly, no, I have never actually heard the Smiths. I just know about them that they are some famous band that people like and respect… Nope, can’t name one of their songs. They are like some boy band from the 90s, right?

Yeah, I read the “reincarnated poorly” part, but you mentioned The Smiths, so I’m assuming you must be making some sort of comparison, and so I asked you if you’d ever even heard the Smiths because there is absolutely nothing to compare the two other than the standard band set up. You may as well have said “Backstreet Boys reincarnated poorly” as it makes just as much sense.
Let’s put this to bed: what is it about The Drums that makes them a poor reincarnation of the Smiths besides the fact that they sound nothing alike?

We agree to disagree. I would say that The Drums are a band heavily influenced by The Smiths, from their posture to their sound to their lyrics.

    OK FINE.

The song in the first video sounds more like the Psychedelic Furs though (specifically, the chorus sounds like “Heaven”)…and New Order, at least admit that.

    COME ON.
The more I listen, the more I hear Real Estate too.

    All the best
    DONNY
